Barbra Streisand: “Send the whole world to hell and you will be admired”
Until she was 18, she was Barbara, the same as the thousands of women who bore this name. But being obsessed with the idea of personality, she simply threw away one letter and became Barbara. The one and only that will subsequently become the idol of millions, one of the most commercially successful, famous and beloved women in show business. Actress, singer, director, composer, producer, winner of the Oscar, Grammy, Tony and many other awards honoring the skill of this, no doubt, great woman. On April 24, 2017, Barbra Streisand turns 75 years old.
Brooklyn Girl’s American Dream
An ugly Jewish girl with small curls and freckles was born and raised in Brooklyn. It seemed to everyone around that the only in every sense the outstanding natural gift of the future star was a huge nose, which she refused to correct throughout her Hollywood career. The mother believed that the profession of a secretary would become a ceiling for her daughter, and the stepfather humiliated and beat the stepdaughter, to which his wife indulgently closed her eyes.
Young Streisand, on the threshold of a great future, had nothing but self-confidence and huge ambitions. She has been working since 14 years. At first she was a cleaner in a theater on wheels, where she sometimes appeared on stage in small roles, then she began to sing in Manhattan’s gay bars. By the age of 20, Barbara, with her amazing vocal range, has already performed on Broadway.
In 1963, her debut musical album, The Barbra Streisand Album, was released, bringing 21-year-old Streisand two Grammy awards. In 1968, she first appeared on the movie screen, starring in the main role in the musical comedy “Funny Girl”. 10 days before her 27th birthday, Barbara won the Academy Award. Great career start, isn’t it? And then there were years of fruitful work in the cinema, music and theater field, where Streisand almost always succeeded.
Queen of hearts
In modern cinema, actors playing love on the screen consider almost technical compatibility in the frame, relying on the visual harmony of the couple. If Streisand started her career now, who knows how successful she would have been. Refusing from plasticity and transforming herself under the Hollywood beauty canons, Barbara starred with the most beautiful partners. On-screen lovers of the actress were Omar Sharif, Robert Redford, Jeff Bridges, Chris Kristofferson.

The personal life of the star was also successful. From 1963 to 1971, she was married to actor Elliot Gould, from whom she gave birth to her son James. In 1998, Barbara married James Brolin, with whom she had been together for over 20 years. Between her two marriages, Barbara survived many novels, and almost completely disappointed in the men whom she calls deceivers and hunters. She always liked handsome men, and her own flaws did not stop her at all and did not force her to complex: “You say that I am ugly, but look at the men who are next to me!”

Unlike most colleagues in the acting department, Streisand was never obsessed with the idea of either perfect beauty or eternal youth. “Who cares how old you are? You woke up in the morning – and this is already a joy. For every day you live, you need to thank God. If you are afraid of birthdays, then why live at all? ”

“I am not interested in experience, I always follow instincts,” is not the only known phrase of the actress, who puts her own self-awareness at the forefront of her. The canons imposed by others are alien to her, even if their viability is confirmed by generations. She does not tire the audience with her presence on the screen and in the press, continuing to explore and relish this life from different angles, including those that are unexpected for the public. So, for example, in 2010 her book “My Passion for Design” was published, in which she shares her thoughts on the architecture and interior design of her houses, starting from her first Brooklyn apartment.
Shocking and doubting
Despite a huge number of professional achievements, Barbra sees herself primarily as an actress, because this is exactly what she always dreamed about. Either seriously, or out of female coquetry, she does not consider her vocal abilities outstanding and has repeatedly stated that she does not like to sing. In one of the interviews, she said that she should not be called a singer, but “an actress who sings” – this will be more true and closer to the truth. From childhood she raved about the theater and went on to realize this dream, and she began to sing only for the sake of earning. And, apparently, more than 60 released albums did not change the situation.
People who happened to work with Barbra Streisand, note her difficult character. Confident, demanding, purposeful, in her youth she was scandalous and shocking.
